Viscosupplementation?

Viscosupplementation refers to an FDA-Approved treatment for knee arthritis pain that has been used in the United States since the mid 1990’s. There have been tens of millions of these types of injections performed on the knee joint worldwide since it was first introduced in Europe in the 1970’s. “Visco” is short for viscosity, and “supplementation” means we are supplementing the arthritic joint with more joint fluid to cushion, lubricate and better protect the joint providing pain relief and improved function.

As an arthritic joint deteriorates from osteoarthritis, the cartilage begins to erode and breakdown. This creates an inflammatory response and causes increased pain, restricted movement and an eventual decline in your quality of life. We would like to intervene as quickly as possible to help you maintain your lifestyle and hopefully avoid more invasive treatments like surgery.

These treatments are all-natural, meaning they are not technically considered a medication by the FDA. These viscosupplementation products also known as hyaluronic acid injections are a naturally occurring substance found in all synovial joints. Hyaluronic acid is secreted by the cartilage cell and other parts of the joint and is the primary component of joint fluid known as synovial fluid. As the cartilage begins to deteriorate, our joints lose the ability to manufacture enough hyaluronic acid to keep them properly lubricated. By supplementing the joint with more hyaluronic acid we are able to replenish the proper volume and proper quality of the joint fluid, which helps relieve pain and helps restore joint function.

Every joint injection is performed under digital low-dose x-ray imaging to increase accuracy, decrease risk of adverse events and increase patient comfort during the treatments. This is extremely important because research shows that 30% of injections performed without the use of X-ray guidance miss the joint entirely rendering these types of treatments less helpful.
