Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (NALU)
Nerve stimulation devices have been used to successfully manage chronic pain for than 4 decades. Like the idea of a TENS unit, this tiny implantable device sends gentle electrical impulses to the site of your pain to disrupt the nerve signal before it reaches the brain. This requires no therapy sessions or medications.
Traditionally, these types of neurostimulation devices were large and only implantable for the spinal cord. The leads typically needed to be surgically implanted by a spine surgeon and the battery implanted somewhere under the skin near the buttocks. This was quite a deterrent for most patients unless they were desperate.
Now, neurostimulation devices have come a long way with advancements in technology. The NALU device we use is only the size of a dime and can be implanted directly at the site of your pain for many conditions including;
- Chronic lower back pain
- Chronic knee pain
- Post knee replacement knee pain
- Chronic shoulder pain
- Neuropathy in the lower legs and feet
The patient would first undergo an in-office trial to see if the NALU stimulator effectively treats their pain. If we have success with the trial at reducing the patient’s pain, we would then consider implanting the NALU device for long term pain relief.
